Just wondering if anyone else here used PCDI. I have one lesson left and I will be done with them. I feel that the training has been very thorough and have been working at home for my OB/GYN since January. I really enjoy it. Just wondering what everyone thought of PCDI.

Hello!

I am also training with PCDI. I have completed all but the transcription part of the course. I should be receiving that shipment this week. I am enjoying the course, also. Unfortunately, you will not get any positive feedback regarding the course here. If you do a search and put in PCDI, you will get plenty of posts regarding the course we are both taking. I am hoping my past medical knowlegde and experience will help me out with finding a job. Good luck!

Connie

Thanks so much for replying! I feel like it has been a good training. I just have Lesson 21 left to do. You will love the transcription part of it. Just spend a lot of time learning the rules and it will be just fine. I feel that the terminology part was by far the hardest part, but I really learned a lot!

Hi -- how long has it taken you to complete the course? I'm looking for something that I can move at my own pace -- even if that means I can finish a couple of lessons a week.

Thanks!

I started about a year ago and went at a VERY slow pace with the terminology part of it. I wanted to be sure to do a good job and really learn it well. The transcription part of it is so much fun and after the few first lessons it really goes fast! If you want it too. PCDI is great for being able to work at your own pace. I believe they give you up to 24 months to complete the course if you need. I hope this is of some assistance.

I started the course in February and have moved along at pretty steady pace. I will be starting the transcription part of it shortly. The medical portion of the course came pretty easy to me as I have been in the medical industry for about 15 years. I can't wait to start the transcription part of it, but from what I hear it is pretty easy. It's not "real life" transcription, just someone reading the records. The course recommends completing one lesson a week. A lesson will consist of two chapters of reading, then your workbook, then your exam. They will also send you a floppy disk with games you can play which pertain to the lesson you have just completed. It's a fun way to retain the information you have just read. I have also started to build my reference library. If you are thinking of the PCDI course, I would first recommend you doing a search and typing PCDI, you will get a lot of information. This is not a recommended course. I was very nervous and frustrated reading about PCDI here after I enrolled and started my lessons. I am making the most of it though and am hoping that my previous background will help me out in finding a job. It seems that M-Tec and Andrews are the two popular schools on this board. So, if you want to better your chances of finding a job after your education, I would recommend checking out their courses.

Please do a thorough search on this school. Keep in mind these points...

1. Do you really want to learn medical transcription from a place that also offers air conditioner repair and child daycare?
2. Is it really possible to completely train for a new career for $789? (PS--some of us have to pay that for the chair we sit in...others pay that much and more just for their reference libraries)
3. Should you be taking a transcription course from a place that does not even provide a transcriber? Kind of like telling a pianist not to use a piano!
4. Your practice consists of 38 reports (curious to know how many minutes of dictation that is). I'll bet that most of the MTs here can transcribe the entire thing in a day or two...three for the sake of argument.
5. At least it appears they have given up this statement, but remember the "You can earn $40K a year"? Sure you CAN, but WOULD you, really?

Other side of the story...I came from a community college where I really thought I learned a lot. I did, for the limited exposure to the medical world that I had previously. However, the job was far harder than the course was. Don't lose your confidence, but don't forget that there are so many things you still don't know that you always have a lot to learn.

Compare the really good programs (by reputation...for a reason); Andrews, M-Tec, etc. Then check out the weak programs; PCDI, AHP, etc. There is a world of difference.

I have also heard that about PCDI. I guess you get what you pay for. LOL I had previous experience and basically needed to be able to do one from home because I have four small kids. But I did learn a lot and I have a great resource library built up which is helping a lot.

And yes, the trasncription part was a breeze. They have all the formats and such and it makes it easy to see what you need to do.

One thing that really bugged me - there were so many mistakes and typos in the literature. many times I was e-mailing and telling them and they told me they were aware of the mistakes. My question to them was why didn't they correct the literature then instead of sending it out to the people taking the course! That is very unprofessional, I think. But overall I did like the course and I think so much is in the on-the-job training experience that you have to get when you are first starting out.

But I would definitely have to agree - be sure to look over all the options before settling with PCDI.

Oh dear.....there may be some red flags out there from a potential employer perspective. I don't know how 38 practice dictations could possibly prepare anyone for what working MTs face. If a person was really good, an office may take a chance, but I doubt this background would prepare you for acute care transcription.

To market yourself to a potential employer, you may face some additional remedial work. Try not to be discouraged but be realistic. If you are not well prepared to do the job, you need to figure out a way to sharpen your skills to make yourself attractive to an employer.

Good luck and let us know how you are doing.

Right now my only client (that I have been working with since January) is an OB/GYN that has a clinic here in town. I absolutely love it!!!! And I did dental transcription in high school and that was neat, too.

A friend of mine will be opening her own practice in chiropractic/natural care in August and I will be working with her, too. SHe will also have a massage therapist and an accupuncturist with her. So that will be a really neat challenge for me, too! I am so excited! I plan to build up my business gradually, as I have four children ranging from 6 months - 7! This fall I will have two in school, so I will be able to take on more work. The possibilities are endless if you are able to get some experience under your belt.

It sounds like you are on your way. Be sure not to become narrow in your specialty as voice recognition has become more common in the more techno-saavy offices. Try to have as broad a base of knowledge as you can so that if one avenue is closed off to you, you won't be stuck.

Good going - especially with four little ones!

I do want to work in all fields - just that I am working as I find jobs along the way. It just so happens that OB/GYN was the first thing I ran across. I had mentioned to her during my last pregnancy that I was doing MT work and she didn't have anyone yet, so I got in right away! It is a great working relationship. They just call me when they have tapes for me to come and get and I get it back the next day. She doesn't expect me to get it done that quick, but I think quick turn-around time is very crucial so that patient records are very current.

I am an M-Tec student. They also have a message forum there. Someone posted recently that she had completed the PCDI course and went job hunting. She was advised by one of the national companies that PCDI is not recognized by most of the large MT companies and they would not test her. So, if you are looking for a job with a national as soon as you graduate, PCDI is definitely not the school to choose.
