I was just accepted into their externship program but I can't find out very much information on the company. I have emailed them some questions, but have not heard back yet. Has anyone worked for them? Thanks

mom2abby: I was looking at the ad for the externship with USA Type. Did you e-mail your resume to them? Did they tell you what an extern will be making per line? Interested, MarshaW

I applied twice for this externship. Today was the second time. The first time I did not receive any response. But today, very shortly after I posted my resume and transcript, I got an email response from Sheri Steadman who says she has review my transcript and resume and qualify for the externship. However, the first sentence of the email says this: Externship provides training in lieu of pay. The term is 4 months. This says strictly a training and IF there ar any positions available at the end of the Training, externships get first crack, but if no positions available then we can use them as a reference. Does anyone have any opinions on this USAType? Does anyone think the externship from USA Type is an acceptable position? Thank you

Cleanseeker, I'm glad you got a response this time. I wonder if anyone else has any imformation on this too? Seems like something I would want to do once I'm finished with my course. First crack at their jobs seems like a good thing, especially when it seems so hard to get anywhere as a new grad. Anyone else have an opinion? Kim J.

Hi, Have you considered looking at HealthScribe? They are definitely hiring newbies right now. I am a newbie and just got a job with HealthScribe yesterday! They have hired a LOT of grads from my course in the last several weeks. You would begin in their mentoring program for the first month, and you do get paid! Just a thought... Anne

Miss Jones: I am weighing options right now (limited, I know), but I just thought that externship was something different. For example, the school I originally looked into attending had an externship program once you were close to graduating. But with this externship program, you got paid, not full scale but you did get paid. I just don't want a Trans AM problem like so many other have had. Anne: Yes, I did check Healthscribe. I am not sure where I got the info, maybe here in the classified. Anyway I emailed them my resume on the 25th of this month. No response yet. Thanks for all your input. Keep em coming.

Thank you everyone for your response. I finally did get a reply from them and got the same information. I told the recruiter that I could not go another 4 months without pay (that I would do 1 month) and she said that 8 months was not enough time to learn anything and that I should do more schooling. Go figure ... I guess back to the trenches

I think this sounds like a lot of bunk. Imagine not getting paid for your work. It would be better to get a lower rate while training but to work free is ridiculous. Also, you can learn a great deal in 8 months. This type of greed really makes me angry. There are other companies willing to mentor you and still pay you. Best of luck.

Clean: Don't be afraid to re-submit your resume to HealthScribe once every 2 or 3 days until you get a response, especially if you're serious about working for them. They receive TONS of e-mail every day. What a great opportunity!

Hi, I went to VLC. I definitely recommend it! It is a great course, and a lot of us are getting jobs right at graduation. Anne

I am with Anne - I leave in the morning for VA for Healthscribes training. I was hired before even finished the class. Don't just send them a resume - go to their website - Healthscribe.com and you need to fill out application and do a small test - If you pass you will have a phone interview and then go on to the other testing - Debbee

I too applied for the externship program with usa and rec'd e-mail back. I don't have a scanner nor a fax so I can't fax my certificate to them. but after hearing you don't get paid anything, i'm not so sure I want this. sounds almost like trans-am. I need x-tra money so I don't know, will see how it goes. I took separate courses in med. terminology, anatomy and medical transcription and my school doesn't keep all the records on file, only the new ones so they would have to go back to their old files and they won't do that for me. I only have my certificate so if that isn't good enough....will see what happens.

Additional Note regarding Externship: After the third time of sending Resume and Transcript to USA Type, the sent me an email saying I was eligible for the externship, four months with no pay, then first chance at a position with them if one was available. I had decided to go ahead and take the externship even without pay; keeping the practice thing going and staying sharp until a paying position comes along. So I went ahead and sent an email back to them saying I wanted more information about the externship and was interested in accepting. Guess what? They stiffed me. I have not heard anything else from them. I sent another resume and transcript and an email saying that I had been offered an externship but had not heard any more information. No response. I sent the information again and asked if they had received it. They sent a one sentence email back stating that they received it but no more details. I don't believe I will be checking this situation out any further. Good luck to those of you who were accepted. [ 11-13-2002: Message edited by: cleanseeker ]

Hi everyone! I also sent my resume and faxed my transcripts to them. I did not hear anything from them for 2+ weeks. I kept emailing them every other day. Finally I got a response back saying that she had been out of the office and had not looked over the resumes/transcripts, but she would be looking over them that day. Got another response back, said that they had already filled the externships and to check back in four months. I'm like you all, forget for no pay!!
