Anonymous Unregistered

First, I must thank everyone for all of their thoughtfulness and helpfulness on this board. I am a new MT, (or should I say MT student) and practicing MT with lots of questions. My first is about character count. I have seen mentioned on several occasions about 65 characters per line as the usual and customary charge. What exactly is this based on? I use a 12 pitch with Times Roman Numeral Font and margins of 1.25 left and right. When I physically count characters including spaces I will average 85 characters per line. When I use my character count on Word 97 and divide the characters by 85 and compare to a physical count of my lines it seems to work out within 1 or 2 lines each time; so therefore I charge based on 85 character line counts. Am I doing this correctly, or am I cheating myself out of the correct reimbursement? Please help? This question has been bugging me for some time now. Thanks!! Debbie

Personally, I'm an employee and do not bill clients; however, since you're new to MTDesk, I thought it might be helpful to introduce you to the "Search" function.

Under the "Post New Topic" button towards the top of the page, you'll see in teensy letters "search." Click on that and then type in "characters per line."

That will search this forum for previous messages where this topic has been discussed and might be quite helpful to you.

I just wanted to mention that I use Word 97 and bill for lines and this is the formula I use: Add words to characters and divide by 65. This gives you the total number of lines, including spaces. You really are cheating yourself if you are using 85 characters to a line! In a 65-character line, that would normally include spaces or any keystroke such as boldfacing or underlining.

CRenee,

Are you using the same Font, pitch and margins when you count 65 character lines? I realize that these things can change the amount per line. Is the 65 characters per line an average of what most lines would be or can you physically count 65 keystrokes (including spaces, underlining, etc) in your line. I certainly want to be fair to me and to the doctors. If the doctor would actually sent down and count the keystrokes on your document, would he actually count 65?

Gaile, I took your suggestion about checking the archives for other topics along these lines, and it was very helpful to me. It appears that formatting is not an issue when doing line count. The standard is 65 characters per line based on AAMT. I appears that for the last year I have been drastically cheating myself out of some $$. Oh well, the problem I will have now is making the adjustment and wondering if the doctor is going to question why I am billing more than I was 2 weeks ago. I guess I could approach him with, "well you have been getting a bargain until now, but I am not going to go back and bill you for the back pay." That should make him happy. Maybe he won't notice the difference. Thanks for all of your help. Debbie

There are several ways to count lines and the one you are using is called by some a "gross" line . . . a line that is printed on the page. If you charge this way, your count will change according to font, font size, and margn widths. I don't charge this way because of that.

When people speak of a 65-character line, they are speaking of counting 65 characters and space combined and calling it a line. It is a fair way of charging the client because you are always using the same unit of measure (the character) and this is never changed by font, font size, or margins.

One of my clients wants his work done in 10 pt Times New Roman, another in 10.5 Ariel, the third and fourth clients in 12 pt Times New Roman. I would be cheating myself if I charged the same for a 10 pt font as for the 12 pt.

None of my clients ever asked me how I determine a line. Yours may not either, but if they do, be sure you aren't cheating yourself. If you feel you must go with the printed line count, make sure you have written down how much you must charge for each different font size or you won't make much money.

My software doesn't count spaces, so I have to add them to my characters (words + sentences + paragraphs because each of these have a space behind them).

Hope this helps.

DBD...the formula adds up to the actual physical count. Bear in mind, that a 65-character line may actually be more than an actual line..it can run over into the next line. I usually work in Times New Roman 12, but sometimes Arial 12 and the pitch/font has never been an issue. If you are ever questioned on your rates, you can cite the AAMT's recommendation of a line being 65 characters including spaces, etc.

By George, I think I've got it now. Thanks for all of your help. I definitely have cheated myself over the past year. I understand now how it works, and I do appreciate all of your help. This board has been a great help to me, and I will continue to learn with the help from all of you. Thanks again, and if I can be of any help to someone else, I will be happy to do so. Thanks, Thanks, Thanks!! Debbie
