I am almost through with my course (AHP) and am between tests. I am going through the resume process to "get my name in the door". I feel I need to keep practicing and was wondering if anyone felt the same. I am not sure of the school rules (please let me know if anyone knows) but I wondered if anyone wanted to swap some of their practice tapes with me.
Thanks.

I am in the EXACT same position as you. I too am with the same school and I feel like I need some more practice tapes. So, please if you find somthing PLEASE email me at biglerkm@one.net or post it. I was wondering if it's possible to purchase some practice tapes with answer keys (to make sure I'm doing it right). Or anything! If I come across anything I'll let you know-Karen

I really wish I would of known about Linda Andrews school when I got into this. The extra cost I am sure is worth it. Not to bash our course because it's pretty good but I think it needs more reports to dictate, and a little more correct instruction. Even with all my past medical experience and almost completing the course I still feel like I'm not really ready to work quickly and efficiently, and I have a 99% average! Someone, please help us!!!! You might want to head on over to HPI. Go to the product index and scroll down past the book section. They sell the SUM tapes - with different tapes for each specialty. They are not cheap - but they are worth the $$ if you feel you need more practice..or are looking to continue keeping up your skills while looking for employment. Look in the classified ads on this forum as well -- because I do believe that people sell these when they are through with them from time to time.

Karen and Deb -

In the MTDesk classifieds a couple of people have SUM tapes and answer keys for sale.

The SUM Program is put out by Health Professions Institute. If you want to learn more about the program before you investigate the classifieds, go to:
www.hpisum.com/mtt/frmttslf.html

Make sure you post on the New MT board, and don't get discouraged!!

Try checking with any local clinics or hospitals to see if their MTs will let you take some non-vital/already transcribed tapes to practice on and bring back for review. Or do what I did and luck into an indigent clinic that has no transcription service at present. I worked out a deal with them to do their transcription on a trial basis for free--and I provided cheapy little recorders for them to use. After a three-month trial period, they hired me at my regular rate to do their transcription. I also kept in contact with local transcriptionists whenever I had a question--they were never too busy to offer advice and help, and they remembered my name when they needed extra help--which led eventually to a full-time contract position at one clinic. Also might check with attorneys who specialize in medical litigation--they might have a need for someone to transcribe from tapes, although I think that's usually done by court reporters with their cute little machines. Sometimes you just have to be really creative to get the extra experience, and sometimes you just have to be really lucky! GOOD LUCK!
