Rainey, in the past I've done test tapes for DDI and Health Scribe. At the time, I had been transcribing for ten years. The Health Scribe tape was okay - nothing unreasonable there. The DDI tape, however, was a hoot. As I recall, one doc was talking a mile a minute and repeated everything he said. Another doc was dictating either on a train, next to a train, or possibly even under a train - it was so bad!! The rest of the tape was just as miserable. I can't blame a company for using difficult test tapes - they need to weed out the wannabees. However, if you find a test tape particularly difficult, I think it's reasonable to ask if this is a fair representation of the type work you'd be doing for them. If the answer is yes, you may want to look elsewhere.
