Handling criticism is something I have never been good at in any work situation, but I have suffered some crushing blows to my dignity ever since I have been an MT. I have never minded being corrected, because that it how you learn, but being criticized is a different story. How do you all get through this without tears? I never been accused of being tough, and could use some advice. Thanks in advance to any and all.

Nicolette,
The business of medicine in general produces many who are just down right anal pores. I was a paramedic for years, and am now training for MT. My wife is an RN. Non constructive criticism is part of the business. Learn to pick out the learning points. Folks in medicine are NOT tactful. Also, many are busy covering their own backside by stomping on others. Hang in there, learn what you can. By all means never let them know they got to you because they will keep doing it.

Put your chin back up, take a deep breath. I agree with "Medic". I too was a paramedic, and have worked in many medical environments. Now, constructive critism is useful in learning and take the tips given to learn from. But, rudeness and down right meaness is so uncalled for. Don't take it personally just do the best job that you can, be proud of your work. Don't let them think they are getting to you because it's possible they are stomping on you and your dignity because they don't feel good enough about themselves. And yes, most of the time medical employees are watching their own backs and blaming everyone else for mistakes because in medicine there is very little room for mistakes. Keep working hard and keep your chin up with a smile.

Nicolette: I have found that in the transcription world, "correcting" is done in either two ways - in the spirit of helpfulness and a desire to share knowledge (a whole lot like this board), in which case the whole experience is quite a pleasure, OR, in a downright mean-spirited, know-it-all type way. At any rate, there's so much to keep up with nowadays that corrections will come and no doubt we will all make mistakes sometimes - anyway, hang in there, don't take it personally, and have as much fun as possible!

Nicolette, I know what you mean. I always take criticism personally. I'm working on it. By the time I'm 80, I may have a handle on it.

Thank you all for your support. It is good to know that I am not alone. I will try to shrug off the hurtful and hostile comments, and maybe too by the time I am 80 I will be able to handle them. Thanks again.
