I am currently enrolled in a community college's medical transcription program. My instructor doesn't offer much input on which medical dictionary and drug book (s) would be the best to purchase. I have the Taber's Medical Cyclopedia (17th), and Delmar's 1997 Drug Guide for Nurses. Also in my posession is the AAMT Handbook, and Jablonski's Dictionary of Medical Acronyms and Abbreviations.
Which dictionary do you find to be the best? I also want to purchse a good, recent drug guide. Any suggestions will be appreciated!

There's a discussion going on now in the "How to Find It" forum that may help. See thread

Dear Amy: I wouldn't be able to manage without these two references which were just some of the books provided by Andrews school. One is the "Medical Phrase Index", a comprehensive reference to the terminology of medicine, and "The Surgical Word Book" by Claudia Tessier. In my mind they are must haves, and I think I'd be lost without them. Good luck.

The "Monthly Prescribing Reference" book I could not do without. It's a drug book, comes out the 15th of every month so I get an updated one every month. It's the size of a Reader's Digest, paperback and it's about $42 for a year's subscription. Here's the # just in case you are interested - 1-800-436-9269.

There are many very good reference/resource books/material out there for MTs. However, I usually tell people, who are just starting out, if they do not get any other reference books, to be sure and get the following: Dorland's Medical Dictionary, The Surgical Word Book, The Pharmaceutical Word Book, and The Medical Word Book. I also tell them, that, not having these four books is like a carpenter not having or being without his tools. These have been a tremendous help to me through the 13+ years I have been an MT.

As you have the opportunity, increase your resource library, updating as often as you possibly can. You can only be as efficient as the materials you have. One must keep their materials up-to-date. Things change and are added every day. That is what is so neat or great about this profession, you learn something new each and every day, no matter how long you have been doing this.

Hope this helps. Of course, everyone has their personal preferences as to resource materials, and I have shared mine.

I wish you well. I enjoy doing medical transcription tremendously!

Oh, and one other book that I personally feel is important is a really excellent Anatomy reference. I bought Gray's Anatomy when I first started school but found that it is not much use. It is too hard to find anything in it. When you are typing surgical OR reports it especially comes in handy. I just bought an expensive book that I think will make my research much easier. It is the "Atlas of Human Anatomy" by Frank H. Netter, M.D. It was almost $70.00, but the color illustrations are so wonderfully detailed, yet easy to read. Even though my school's textbook has anatomy plates, they are not of the quality you'll find in a good anatomy book. IMHO! I sat on the floor at Barnes and Nobles and spread about a dozen anatomy books around me, before I made my final selection. Got some funny looks, but I also think I got the best book. Just a thought.

Donna,

I will second the vote for the "Atlas of Human Anatomy" by Frank H. Netter, M.D. !! This is also the anatomy book I have. I went into a medical book store near a huge teaching hospital here. I picked up Gray's Anatomy, but the owner said, "I think this one is a better reference," and handed me the "Atlas."

For anyone who is doing operative reports, a good anatomy book is a must. When I first started doing operatives, I would start each one by opening my "Atlas" to the appropriate body part/area and keep it in front of me as I transcribed. Made a big, big difference. Nothing like having a visual reference of just where you are cutting into.

Medical Transcription Guide is a super reference! I just today received the 1999 edition and it seems more in-depth than the BOS. Covers many areas.

Thank you for all of your replys! After careful consideration, I chose the following books:
Steadman's Illustrated Medical Dictionary
Medical Transcription Do's and Don'ts
1999 Nursing PDR
Jablonski's Abbreviations and Acronyms
(alread had AAMT BOS)

Whew! That is just the beginnings of a extensive library I know I'll eventually acquire. I'm still open to suggestions..thanks again.
