I have been checking all of the jobs postings for MT, and they all want experience! The doctors in my area already have transcriptionists, or just have their secrectaries do it for them. Even the hospital here wants experienced MTs! Does anyone have any ideas how I can get someone to give me a chance?

First of all, try checking with your instructors. Your instructor knows your work better than anyone else. Also, if an employer has hired graduates of your school before and liked them, they will want more just like them! You will be in a very good position. They should allow you to test!

Second, call the transcription departments and don't actually ask for a job. Ask if the supervisor would be willing to allow you to just test to see how your skills stack up and where you need to do more work. If the supervisor cares about quality and wants to help new MTs get into the business, they will probably want to help you out - IF they aren't snowed under. That's a possibility too. If you aren't too demanding and don't pressure so much that you scare them, that may help. The fact that you aren't asking for a job takes the pressure off so that they are more likely to talk to you and allow you to test, for information purposes.

You also might want to check your local yellow pages. Take Linda's advice above and do the same with the local services. See if there is anAAMT chapter in your area and network. Sometimes smaller services are willing to take newbies under their wings and give them a chance.

Take heart - you're not alone. It's not easy getting your foot in the door. Be tenacious and don't lose hope.

I also like that idea of the AAMT local chapter. There are usually wonderful, supportive members who will do everything they can to help you get started, if they know that you are are trying hard.

Even if a hospital or service says experienced, I would look into it anyway. From my experience, that is put into a lot of ads in hopes of attracting seasoned employees. Of course, if the ad is worded like "experienced only need apply" or something obvious like that, then I wouldn't apply. But I've always found it to be worth my while. If you get an interview, that's great and even if you aren't hired for that particular company, it also gives you the opportunity to practice your interviewing skills. Of course, that's just my opinion...I could be wrong. Best of luck to you, though. I hope you find something soon.
