Hello,

What is the correct way of typing orthopedic, or is it orthopaedic? My Stedman's Word Book has orthopaedic on the cover; however, I know somewhere in the book of style I read that they prefer orthopedic, but I cannot find where I read that. Also, my BOS is two years old, and I am not sure if that has been updated. I have searched the archives, but could not find anything under this topic. Thanks for your help.

Both are correct. Orthopaedic is more the Latin derivative. It all depends on your employer, which way they prefer. I had one prefer orthopaedic and now I can't seem to type it any other way, I've gotten so used to it!

To my knowledge, the ae combination is falling out of style, as in encylopaedia. Most modern software cannot run the ae together as the Latin would anyway, at least not without a special character set. Both of the dictionaries I checked showed orthopedics as the preferred spelling. I know some medical publications just love sticking that A in there; I personally find it pretentious. Course, it does give you an extra character.

The British still use the ae and oe spellings, and many hospitals in Canada use them as well. The hospital I transcribe for doesn't particularly care, except for the Anaesthesia Department, who INSIST on the ae combination.

I transcribe for a topnotch hospital and they want everything spelled orthopaedic. Even the signs in the hospital are spelled that way. As has been noted earlier, it depends on the facility's wishes.

softpaws,

I see that you are also from Maine. I am down here in Ogunquit and the wind is about the knock my house off its foundation, or so it seems. Are you going to the Pine Tree Symposium in March? I am planning on going, if so, maybe I will see you there.

Stay warm!
Heidi

Hi Heidi,

No I am not going to the Pine Tree Symposium in March, but it would have been nice to have met you. It is really hard staying warm around here lately...it is snowing in Auburn and mightly cold! I know what you mean about the winds yesterday...brrrrrr! Are you an IC, or do you work for a company? Great talking with you!
