I hate to ask two questions in one night, but I'm having trouble deciding if this needs an edit. It's a "near verbatim" account - closer to verbatim than not though.

"Per parent, Father, he had gotten the child from Mother two days ago."

I'm okay with everything except "gotten", but can't think of a word to replace it that doesn't sound odd in the context.

Obtained, received ... I don't know. Picked up is my next choice, but I'm not sure if that's too much of an edit.

Your thoughts?

Thanks... I appreciate it!
Sandi

Possibly just "got" rather than "had gotten"
I agree "picked up" would be better, but at least "got" is less ugly.

I would not capitalize either father or mother, feeling that this is a generic term rather than specifically substituting for "John Smith".

I can't believe I'm disagreeing with you, Ann R, as I don't recall an instance where I ever did before! LOL. However, to me, "got" is much more ugly than gotten!

Wait a minute!! I knew there had to be something wrong! If one leaves out the "had" as you did suggest, got is much better! Sheesh! Sorry!

No problem, sometimes I wish someone would disagree, as I am certainly not always right and discussion might sometimes be helpful. I looked up the Atomica thesaurus listing for got and it was no help. You would think, since this is such a common situation, that there would be a term for it, but picked up is the best I can do.

For some reason procured came to mind so I went to Roget's thesaurus for that and found all sorts of terms...appropriated, acquired, attained, collected, secured, obtained, and received. Hope that helps.

That's odd... I posted a "thank you" reply last night, but now it's gone.

Anyway, thanks again for the suggestions. I did end up without the capitals for father and mother and used "got this child". I didn't like the sound of it, but it was the best I could come up with for the context.

Thanks again.
