Guys, do you type followup as one word or hyphenated, and should it always be typed that way?

Thanks!

I do one word (not hyphenated) if it's used as a noun or adjective. I use two words without hyphen if used as a verb:

Patient has a followup visit on Monday.
Patient is to follow up on Monday.

Hi, I agree with Katie, but I also use a hyphenation if it is an adjective preceding a subject, so I type it in three different ways, such as:

Patient has a follow-up visit or
The follow-up CT is scheduled

I also have this built into my macros -- "fup" for the noun version of followup, "fups" for follow up (the "s" at the end stands for separate, i.e. the two words are separate in this version) and "fuph" for follow-up (the "h" stands for hyphen).
Hope this helps.

Check your dictionary...

It tells you whether it should be hyphenated or not when being used as a "noun," "verb," or "adjective."

Also - go to previous posts on this subject. There were some additional and interesting points made....

I have never transcribed "follow up" as one word. I either use:

The patient was advised to have a follow-up CT scan.

Or: The patient will follow up with me in one week.

Just FYI, here is what the BOS says about it on page 140 (the rules that I follow):

quote:

followup, follow up
Followup is the preferred noun and adjective form, but the hyphenated form, follow-up remains acceptable. The verb form must be two words: follow up.

The patient did not return for followup.
In followup visits, she appeared to improve.
We will follow up with regular return visits.

Like it says, the hyphenated form is acceptable, but not preferred!

Again, just FYI!
