Can anyone recommend how to get started medical coding & billing as an at-home employee. Are there any good Internet programs that are reliable and not too expensive, or is it best to go to local college? Any information or input anyone can provide would be appreciated.

Andrews also offers a coding course which, I understand, is excellent, just like the transcription course. You might want to look into that program...

Andrews has an excellent coding program. It is by far one of the most complete programs available. I looked into several local programs as well as internet programs and Andrews was by far the most in depth. I graduated from the coding program last August and took the CCS-P exam in September and passed it (which according to the AHIMA is something you shouldn't even attempt until you have a year or two experience in coding). That shows you how well Andrews prepares you for real coding!

I don't code out of my house but I would think that a program that prepares you as well as Andrews does AND passing the certification exam would be crucial to being able to code at home. Companies that hire coders to work out of their home would be more likely to hire a newby that has passed a certification exam.

Good luck!
Sharon
