Is anyone out there offering BOTH transcription and coding as IC?

I'm seriously considering coding training to add to the transcription services I offer as an IC and was wondering if that is feasiable and/or an alternative way to "make ends meet" in this age of losing workload to VR, EMR, etc.

Any ideas?

I've been seriously considering coding also to enhance my skills as an MT and medical editor. Have visited a local college and gotten the prices, now I just have to do it if I want it badly enough.

Were you going to try taking courses on line or at a local college?

Actually I was going to check out both online and school programs. I'd really rather do online for the sheer convenience, but will do whichever makes sense. Am looking for the "Harvard" of such programs though, as I want a program that gets me the most prepared and able to pass the certification exam right off the bat.

Just starting looking into this -- so I'm sure there's lots more research involved.

Thanks for your response.....

While we have been called the Harvard of both medical transcription and medical coding programs, I am not sure it's that easy to combine the two jobs. Most transcriptionists are loaded down with transcription and don't have time to code and coders have stacks of charts (coding is almost always an on-site job) and need to code rather than transcribe. We teach both but I don't see it as a good combination job. There are a few rare exceptions, of course. Our graduates are getting more and more job offers in both of these fields, so the career outlook appears good. I have read posts on message boards of people having lost transcription jobs due to technology, etc., but I don't know any of those people. Those I do know seem to have more job opportunities than ever. I hope that continues, although there are no guarantees, of course.

Thanks for the vote of confidence re the future of transcription. I really like this profession; like the autonomy of "doing my thing" at home. Guess I'm just a bit shell-shocked right now with having a major client go to EMR and their workload plummet.

I went into this as a change from the stress of court reporting and as I was finding it hard to specialize in medical-legal reporting in this area (which is the only reason I had gone into court reporting in the first place).

Maybe I should just calm down a bit, get myself comfortable with the new digital system I am obtaining and then see what happens as far as new clientele. Guess I'm just not used to NOT being swamped with work -- instead of enjoying the "break," I'm stressing over it.

Again, thanks for the info regarding feasibility of coding/transcription.

I would think that you would find your coding skills in great demand. Coders are in very, very short supply. Consider learning a little coding, at least, to see if you enjoy it and if your clients might be tempted to employ you to do both their transcription and their coding.

MTs tend to be a shoo-in for learning coding. They have an excellent background for it, particularly since they are so familiar with what's contained in medical reports.

Sounds like a really good plan, Peggy. I'm planning to get some source materials and take this enforced "down time" to see for myself what the material is like; then make a decision.

I also want to see how much/if any work is available for telecommuting in the coding area (although I presume I'd have to do some time in a hospital in order to get enough experience to be considered for such).

THANKS AGAIN.
