Has anyone taken the Andrews course in medical coding? I am a 25-year veteran of medical transcription and also former nurse who wants to become a certified medical coder. My community college offers a course but the HIM director at our hospital told me that this particular course, although good, did not prepare one for coding in a hospital, which is what I want to do. I'm wondering if the Andrews course is comprehensive enough and covers what I would need to work in a hospital. Anyone? Thanks for any input.

Linda,
Yes, yes, yes....the Andrews course is very comprehensive. I took the course and finished last August. The amount of material that it covered was amazing! I compared the Andrews program to several local and at home programs and none of the others covered the amount of material that Andrews did. I took the CCS-P exam 1 month after finishing the Andrews program and passed! I thought the test was challenging yet I was very prepared! The Andrews program and the wonderful instructors teach you the right way to code from day 1. You learn the basic so well that when it comes to actual coding it all makes sense! There were times on the CCS-P exam that I didn't know an answer but by using the skills that I learned through Andrews I was able to work my way through it.

As far as hospital coding, you would be very prepared! I met another coding student online and we went through the Andrews program together. She got a job in a hospital and they were amazed at how much she knew straight out of school! She also passed the CCS-P exam and is now studying for the CCS exam this spring.

You can email me at shuetsch@aol.com if you want any other information. Good luck
Sharon

Thanks for responding, Sharon! That information is good to know, especially since I've not yet registered for classes at the community college! I probably won't now; I'm leaning more toward the Andrews online courses. I may indeed email you later on if I have questions. Thanks again!
