Hi, Dumb question.....How often are the ICD code books updated or are they just ammended with new codes? I understand modifiers and specialties and the regionality of allowed covered services/procedures and DME. Who does the ammending? Congress? Is this workable with HMOs and Medicare alike? I'm a part-time transcriptionist and a full-time CPhT,and I used to work for a physician and a surgeon and that's how I know enough to have a thoughtful conversation with a coder about coding. I somehow always get into a conversation with an elderly friend of my mother about doctors choosing to accept assignment or not and how the bills get paid (or not) and the co-pays and part B of Medicare and so on. So if someone would be kind enough to let me in on the above mentioned question, I'd be grateful. I'm not a coder and have no plans to be one. I'm busy enough ;~) Carol

CPT, ICD, and HCPCS code books are updated annually. Medicare, which utilizes all three types of codes, will usually send a bulletin updating some of their "temporary" codes, which are HCPCS codes. The AMA makes the changes, adds new codes for new procedures, and deletes codes. They also take into consideration questions and problems submitted to them. Accepting assignment of Medicare benefits is usual, as Medicare limits the amounts charged by those who don't accept assignment, and people eligible for Medicare generally go to providers who accept assignment. IMO, it's also one of the easiest plans to deal with, from a provider's point of view. Electronic claims are paid within a week. HTH.

Thanks for the reply, Law. I wasn't aware that the AMA did the updates, deletions and temp codes. Again, thanks for your time. Now I'll go bug my old friend and see what he has to say about this. He goes to all of the senior rallies and speaks to town reps all the time and any chance he gets. OY...Carol

I'm so pleased to see some ACTION on this board! Since Medical Coding is a booming industry and there is an enormous amount of intrest in it, I wish this board was a little easier to find. I think I'll make a recommendation that they find a way to raise it higher to make it more visible.

Linda, I love to post here if I know an answer, as so many people throughout my career have helped me with their answers. But to tell the truth, sometimes I dig through reference after reference and provide those same helpful guidelines that, in the past, literally saved my skin...only to have my post completely and utterly ignored. And sometimes I don't know if the person received it, found something wrong with it and was embarrassed to correct me, or just mass-posted at ten different boards and grabbed the first answer given. The latter possibility bothers me, as I know that goes on...and it is abusive! So I stopped for a while out of frustration. I'd like to see this bumped up, too, as I am still learning...and billing and coding are constantly changing fields.

Maybe we should ask, before we do all the research, just how important IS this to you anyway? If they reply back about how much they would appreciate the help, we answer. If no reply, no research. How's that?!
