I've been a transcriptionist for 9 years and went back to school to do coding and health information technology. I finished my program with highest honors and now I can't find a job or, if I do find one, it pays almost less than half of what I was paid as a transcriptionist. I was making $14 an hour as a transcriptionist and can't seem to find anything in coding that makes more than $9-10 an hour to start outside of a hospital. A hospital won't even consider me if I dont have the experience in coding. I've decided I've made a huge mistake going into coding. If I could just find a transcription company that also does coding, maybe I could get in as a transcriptionist and work on moving over to coding, but that doesn't seem to be possible anywhere either. Oh well.

Casey

Hi, Casey! May I ask from what program you graduated? Maybe that is making a difference in the pay scenario. I have heard that there are excellent courses out there and there are courses that really do not teach one to code correctly. I do want to say kudos to you for taking the initiative and doing so well in the course.

Much continued success to you,
Alice

You did not say whether or not you obtained an RHIT, CCS, or CPC. In my experience, just finishing the HIM program is not enough. You will probably need to have one of those credentials to get your foot in the door. I know that AHIMA also offers the CCA credential, but to be quite honest, I have yet to see a facility that accepts it. You should also consider an in-house transcription position, as that would be an excellent way to move into coding. You will already be in the HIM department, know the right people, etc. A lot of facilities also give preference to current employees. Good luck ...

I graduated from Davenport University in Michigan. I don't think the school has a bad reputation or anything, but of course I could be wrong. I'm studying for my RHIT, which I hope to take before October 1st.

Amphion does coding and transcription, you could give them a try.

Hi, I just started working for MedQuist about two months ago (as a transcriptionist) and I know they do hire coders. If you go to their website just follow the links, it's pretty easy to find.

Hope this helps!

Dacer,

You might want to look at spheris. Although I'm only investigating this field as a career choice, I've become somewhat knowlegeable.

Get any certification you can. My research tells me to go for the cmt from aamt(medical transcription) and cmcp from accb(medical claims). Do a google for the accb.

Good luck

No education is ever wasted. It is NEVER a mistake to learn something new.

It is certainly not a mistake to go into coding. There are tons of employed coders out there.

Once you have the RHIT, you may find hospital doors opening for you. Employers will look at you with more interest if you have a coding certification, even if it's only the CCA from AHIMA. Work on passing the CPC or CCS-P, or even the CCS if you feel comfortable with it. That will open doors for you.

Any time you change career fields, you end up starting over at the bottom. It doesn't seem fair, but that's the way it is. After you've had a year or two of experience in coding -- any coding -- you'll find that you can get jobs much more easily. You'll feel good about coding and employers will feel good about you.

It's distressing to discover that salaries aren't as high as you might have liked. Look at some recent salary surveys on the internet (AAPC, AHIMA, and FortheRecord) and see what your salary could be in a few years. That will give you hope that your lot will improve. If the only job you can get is at half of what you'd like, keep your current job or part of it until you have enough experience to make the switch.

Don't become discouraged. You have to make this work and you cannot do that if you allow discouragement to affect you.

I have to agree with redpen. Any new skill is a thing that you can market. If you have any background in business, try working for yourself.

ROFL. If I could make any sense of this, I might think it was a come-on. Perhaps we should get out our Urdu dictionaries and throw together a little nonsense, too.

Imran,

You're right. What you describe is a whole different world than most of us are dealing with. Income and expenses differ greatly from one part of the world to another.

Thank you for alerting us to what is happening in your part of the world.

Good luck in your career.

If I hadn't been doing QA all day today, I would have the urge to decipher this. Yikes!
