Hi, everybody. I am trying to decide among M-Tec, Andrews, and Career Step. I really am impressed with what M-Tec has to offer, but am concerned about the amount of time (12-14 months) they give as the estimated completion period. My kids are in school during the day and I don't have a job at this time, so I can devote a lot of hours per week to my studies. I was a court reporter for 20 years, so I know some terminology and am a fast typist.
I would like to hear from some of you regarding how long it took you to go through the course. I know, I know, everybody's different. I'm just wondering on a practical level if it's really going to take me that long.
Another question I have: I just found out yesterday that Career Step doesn't use SUM. Is that a good reason to steer clear?
I am so excited to be finally getting my rear in gear to do this!
I have GOT to learn how to use those cute little graemlins! When I click on one, it puts words on the screen, rather than the cute little guy. Or is that how it's supposed to appear as you're writing?
Thanks!

I really think I would have been able to complete the course in 12 months if I didn't have things come up. I have 2 kids who I had to feed and stuff at the time too.
Still, you never know if something will "come up" for you too. I think you could probably swing it. I was very motivated.
Goo luck!
Had to change that 9 months to 12 months. My count was off. It really does go by quickly. If aren't going to have kids bugging you every 3 minutes, the 9 months may work for you.
And HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Thanks for the encouragement and the birthday greetings. I am going to make a pros/cons list over the weekend and make a decision so I can get started.
I wish I had gotten started on this at the beginning of the school year; my kids will be driving me crazy here in a few months' time.

Hello SuzQ -- thanks for stopping by. I apologize for not getting back to you sooner, but I don't get to the forums often enough! I think we may have corresponded via email already?
I believe you already have the answer to your time frame question, and it really does depend on you and how many hours a day you can spend studying. Take the distractions out of the equation, and the average time to complete is somewhere around 12-14 months.
As for the SUM program, we believe it is the best teaching tool on the market today in terms of transcription practicum. Both M-TEC and Andrews school use the SUM program and have sucessfully gone through the AAMT program approval process. That speaks pretty highly of the curriculum we are each using!
If there is anything else I can do to help you with your research into the MT profession, please feel free to email me at sfrancis@mtecinc.com or drop by our message forums and say hello! We are all there to help.

Susan, you're right, we have corresponded. I have submitted my Sallie Mae app and am waiting to hear back regarding that. Once I do, you'll be getting my enrollment app. I am so excited to be going down this road finally!!! Thanks for all your valuable input!

Oh my gosh, a reply on the same day as your post! I'm on top of things today! I am happy to hear you will be joining us soon. Don't hesitate to contact Janet if you have any problems or questions about the student loan. She will be happy to help you with the process. Be sure to drop by the M-TEC forums too and say hello. If there is anything I can do, just holler.
We look forward to working with you soon!
Susan
