I have been back and forth over the past few weeks between Andrews and M-TEC (like many other people). I met with an Andrews graduate and looked through some of her stuff from school. I was surprised to find that she transcribed tapes. I thought tapes were outdated. She went to Andrews 6 years ago, so I am wondering if tapes are still being used or if the transcriptions are on disc now or what.

I would also like to know if both Andrews and M-TEC use the same thing, as in, do they both use tapes, do they both use discs, etc. If anyone who is currently enrolled in either school could let me know that would be great! I know it seems weird that I would even care, but to me, tapes are just so outdated and I need to be on top of the current technology trends or else I may just fall behind forever! I literally just figured out what an MP3 is.....

I am currently a student at Andrews and we don't use tapes. Everything is now on disc. Andrews is a great school and I think that it is virtually impossible to graduate and not be able to get a job. They are very thorough and don't pass you along to the next module until you are ready.

I'm sure there are many M-TEC grads who feel the same way.

I used tapes in my training, but that was 1999/2000. The doc I worked in-house for (2001-2004) used tapes. Two docs I worked for from 2003-2008 used tapes, and the one doc I currently work for uses tapes. Yes, they are ancient technology, but they are still around.

Yes, tapes are still around. You might be surprised to hear this, but it makes little difference whether you learn from tapes or CDs.

It's somewhat of a myth that learning from CDs is somehow better. They don't really do anything to prepare you to work online. That would only be true if the only skill you were learning was how to select a dictation on the computer screen.

It would be like thinking there was a crucial difference in learning to write using a pen that has a detachable cap versus a push-button. It would be silly to say that you needed to learn with a detachable cap so that you would be able to use that kind of pen later. In truth, you adapt quickly to such a small thing. It's learning to WRITE that is important.

In transcription, it's learning to UNDERSTAND and WRITE that is important, not whether you learn to mash a footpedal attached to a tape transcriber or a nearly identical footpedal attached to a computer. Your brain does far more learning than your feet!

The same goes for learning any particular word processing software, dictation software, or transcription platform. Those things are minor in comparison to the massive undertaking of learning to transcribe. Those things in themselves are not really even a part of learning to transcribe. They are things that change from employer to employer. A transcription course should teach you flexibility and adaptability, so that you can do what needs to be done on each new job.

Not having to mess with a chunky transcriber does save you room on your desk, and it might enable you to study in a variety of places with a laptop. It also enables schools to avoid having to ship the equipment and troubleshoot it later.
