Hi,

I already have a certificate in medical transcription obtained from a community college. However, I wasn't able to find a job due to lack of experience. I haven't done any transcription for two years now.

I was thinking about taking a course at M-tec. Here are a few questions:

How does the transcription part work? Am I graded on speed as well? How long does it take until the reports are graded?

How many hours a day did you spend on course work?

Is it easy to find a job after I am done with the course work?

Is the MT profession on the decline and I should look for something else?

Any information you have is greatly appreciated \:\)

Try contacting Susan or Kathy at M-TEC; they can answer all your questions. Also, if you have not already, peruse the pinned threads that touch on this topic. Oodles of info there too.

Bottom line, it's either M-TEC or Andrews.

Hi,

I am currently in the middle of my course work at M-TEC. I would suggest contacting Kathy or Susan as well, since they could answer some of your questions better.

Course work is focused on both transcription and book work (vocabulary, anatomy, etc.) Time is not so important as accuracy. Some of the assignments are self-graded, and they want you to repeat the assignment until a minimum accuracy is obtained. There are also graded exams that include transcription, again, accuracy is the most important! It usually takes my instructor about 4 days or so to get graded work back, and she includes many detailed comments not simply "this is wrong" or "do it this way".

Best of luck, and search this site, read the threads!

Thank you. \:\)

Accuracy is important to me. I rather have it right even if it takes a little longer.

Accuracy is most important. Speed will come with time.

Oh, I forgot to add that you can also search the forums at M-TEC. I found that helpful when researching MT and schools. Best of luck.

Try doing a search here with the word Everett, blanking the "newer than" fields, and using 1 day in the "older than."

Hello there,

I am brand new to this site, so I've been spending the last few days looking around it to see what experienced MTs have had to say about assorted industry-related topics. I came upon the topic of schools offering MT training and -- much to my surprise (indeed shock) -- I found that the one with which I am studying (AHP) does not seem to be viewed very favorably in the MT community (at least by the postings I have seen up to now).

To give you a quick Cliff's Notes background: I chose to pursue MT after building a hard-working, 35-year career in a totally unrelated industry -- one which now views EXPErience simply as EXPEnsive...meaning those who believe on Monday that their years of background and knowledge with the company make their positions solid suddenly find out on Friday that they are being abruptly replaced by a younger, much cheaper employee. Why MT? Because I have long been interested in finding a place in the medical profession. To me there is none that is more necessary nor likely more fulfilling in the end. But until I heard about MT I wasn't sure there was an area in that field that fit my personal and professional strengths. AHP convinced me that MT could be that avenue. After all, at 57 years old (and still working full-time, although who really knows for how long) it seems to be a little late to be starting along the path toward becoming a doctor!

But my great concern now is that even though I am 60 percent of the way through the AHP course (and 80 percent paid up) I am starting to believe that not only will I not find any work upon its completion -- I may be laughed out of an interviewer's office! I fear that I should have logged onto this site months ago, but like a previous poster once mentioned: You don't know what you don't know.......

Thanks to all for what have been very enlightening posts on this site.....I only wish I'd seen them many, many months ago!

Welcome Hal!

I would check with AHP to see whether they are willing to help you find employment after you graduate. M-TEC and Andrews provide such good training that employers are willing to work with them. If AHP doesn't offer such help, it may possibly be because employers are not willing to hire their grads due to a lack of education.

I hope that won't be the case for you. Best wishes.
