Hi! I am in a small town in central Texas and have been an MT for about 8 months working for a national since graduation. Today I was called about a job at a local hospital. The supervisor asked me how much $$$ I would be happy with to start. The thing is...I HAVE NO IDEA AT ALL WHAT TO ASK FOR. It is an in-house position with 401K and benefits. I have an interview tomorrow. I looked on the Dept. of Labor's site and the "mean" for MTs is in the $15 range. Is this a reasonable amount to start?? What is the lowest I should accept for an in-house position???? Any and all opinions are welcome!!!

At the risk of being told yet again that I am rude and unhelpful, why not just answer her direct question with what you would be happy with. She's asking you. Tell her.

I assume you know what you make now hourly. Does that make you happy? Would $1 more an hour make you happy? $2? $5?

As far as the DoL site, do you consider yourself 'mean'? Better than 'mean'?

TBH, when salary negotiations start with them asking you what you want (for this type of job), they are really hoping you sell yourself short - it's a common hiring strategy. Perhaps a better question you should ask is whether you want to play to their hand or command the game yourself.

Tropsicle makes a good point. If the company wants to hire you, they will make you an offer regardless of what you tell them you desire to be paid. If you want more than what they "had in mind", then they are likely to make the best offer they can.

Elisha is right. A few MTs here in the Chicago area make 11.5 cpl working for a doctor's office (I'm not sure which specialty). They are able to work from home with benefits (I'm not sure about the 401K). Shoot high and see what they offer you.

Best wishes!

I agree with moaab. Shoot high, and see what they say. Better to ask for more, than less. That way you will still probably end up with more than you would had you started out low!
Good Luck!

Thank you guys for all of your help. My husband told me the same thing, tropsicleAfter. My only concern is that I will come off as being cocky if I asked for too much money. I do know that they are in DESPERATE need of MTs. I have several friends that are nurses there and have told me that the TAT is several days.

There's a big difference between being cocky and knowing the true value of your services. You are the supplier and they have the demand. You know what that's done to gasoline prices lately . . . suddenly you're supplying the gas! Ask big. The worst they can do is say no.
