I too am not a flatlander anymore having become a Floridian about 2 years ago. But, I'm originally from the small town of Lawrenceville. Where's that you ask? (Everybody does.) Draw a straight line eastward from St. Louis to the Indiana state line. There it is.

Hi! I am Illinois born and raised. We live right across the river from St. Louis (6 miles to be exact.) Nice to meet you. What part of Central Illinois are you in? My daughter went to ISU last year (Bloomington/Normal) so we were up there quite a bit.

I was also born and raised in Illinois (northern) and graduated from NIU in DeKalb. We lived in Des Plaines when I was born, but when I was 6 months old moved to Crystal Lake (McHenry County). A great place to be from, but I wouldn't live there again if you paid me! (There were 4000 people when we moved there and about 12000 when I moved to California. Gotta be upwards of 40K now, though...heck, it takes half an hour to drive across town now! Not to mention the outrageous property taxes--my FIL pays $12K/year on his house--yes, just property taxes!) It's wonderful to visit, especially beautiful in the summer when everyone's yards look like park settings! It's just too darn crowded for me! (And for those of you thinking that California has the highest population of all the states, I have always lived in extremely rural California. Plenty of wide open spaces here still.)

ILMT (I love MT?!)
I am from Petersburg, home of New Salem State Park and all that touristy stuff surrounding Abraham Lincon. About 17 to 20 miles north of our state capitol, Springfield. Although I am not originally from Illinois, originally from beautiful southern Wisconsin (raised on a dairy farm). Lived here now for almost 10 years, still not used to the humidity in the summer though, and this year seems to be especially bad for it. Doesn't seem like there are many of us MTs out there in this area, I have had this on the board for awhile and am finally getting a few responses. Nice to hear from all of you.

I used to live in Glenview-right next to Des Plaines. My family and I moved to Hoffman Estates when I was around 18. And then I moved to Indiana to be with my husband; it's totally different here!

Hey Jenny, we've still got friends living in Glenview (they were just out here visiting, in fact!). The northwest suburbs are so totally different now from when I still lived back there! In fact, back then, Crystal Lake wasn't even considered to BE a suburb...it was the boonies, for sure! Everything around there was agriculture and dairy farms. Now I can't figure out where they're actually growing the corn being sold at the roadside veggie stands!

When I was back there last year, my FIL took me for a ride to show me the growth. The acres and acres that used to belong to the stables where I kept my horses is now nothing but a sea of roofs (obviously no more trail riding at that place!)! It just amazes me. They're not inexpensive homes either.

I can understand the farmers selling out to developers, but it makes me so sad to see those 4-acre houses on 5-acre lots. (I know Mike Ditka and Oprah have places like that out there. Also, the director, John Hughes, has been buying up the old farms in McHenry County to the point where he has thousands of acres. He is NOT selling to developers, thankfully! )

I know Kingxray lives up there, but is there anyone else from northern Illinois around here?

Any of your friends' kids or grandkids go to Glenbrook South High School?

They've never had any kids, I'm afraid; however, Virginia works at one of the high schools...I don't think it's Glenbrook. It might be New Trier.

I was born in Holy Cross Hospital (south Chicago...sorry). Raised for three years in Chicago Ridge. Then onto Michigan for most of my life. Back to Park Forest (again, far south) for a bit before back to Michigan and then Texas.

Looks like I will manage to get back up to Michigan again before summer though, so I will be "closer" to IL!

I'm going to be moving back to the Putnam, Bureau, LaSalle county area. I was wondering if those of you who are rural are working for local, in-state docs, or are you working for a service, etc.? I would really be interested in getting my own accounts, but fear "making it" up there with very little potential. Maybe some of you can help me with this. When I lived there before, I was not an MT and so I really have no idea what the situation is for an MT in central Illinois. P.S. I was not always rural. I grew up in Naperville and went to school there. I bet the market is great there if you can afford the cost of living, eh?

I'm also in Illinois. The little town of Nashville to be exact. We are about an hour straight east of St. Louis. Medmom, I'm also an SE for MQ. Well, I guess I won't be for long, I'm looking for something else. Nice to meet you anyway!

Jeannie,
I know exactly where Nashville is. We drive through there a couple of times a year to get to our church camp, Dubois Center. I just love looking at the big old houses as we go by. One of these years, I'm going to stop and knock on one of their doors and ask for a tour.

Hi Ruthanne,

I wish I could say I lived in one of those wonderful houses, I'd be happy to give you a tour! This is the epitomy of small town living I guess. I have been through Granite City a time or two, but don't really know much about it other than one end of it looks like it's on fire all the time...lol.

Glad to have met you!

Hi. I was wondering if anyone out there is truly satisfied with their decision to become an MT? After they went all through the schooling, and became hired by an MT company, do they feel somewhat secure in their position. What with voice recognition taking over in some places, I was just wondering if the MT who has gone to school for it and spent a lot of time and money on becoming an MT, feels secure (money wise, employment wise, benefit wise, and feels there is a future in it). Is it all what they had hoped for as they were going to school? Are they able to pay the bills with the money they make from MT and still have some left over? I know there are people out there who have definitely succeeded, but I am talking about the person who started from scratch and didn't know any medical words beforehand and it took them a while (through schooling)to be come an MT. Experience MT's make a lot of money. I am talking about the one who just graduated from school a couple of years ago and is now doing MT for about 2 years?
If there is anyone out there in like the 4-5 year range into MT, please, if you can, answer some of the questions that this MT student has just asked?

Yep, that would be our steel mill. There is a lovely smell associated with it also, as well as a fine layer of dust that covers everything in the area. I live on the other side of town, so I don't have to deal with it too much. It is definitely one of the major employers in this town, though, so I'm not complaining.

I will answer at least one of the questions you asked. Regarding VR, I got a call yesterday from the office manager of a doctor who used to share office space (totally separate practices although it was the same specialty) with the doc I transcribed in house for. She wanted to know if I still did transcription and if I would like to do theirs. I did fill-in work for this doc once maybe 3 years ago. I have not worked for the other doc in 1-1/2 years and have not seen this person who called me in 2 or 2-1/2 years. She said their current MT is making grammatical mistakes and putting in wrong words, etc. They think she is using VR. That seems odd to me because you still have to edit and she should be catching those mistakes. Anyway, I go to pick up a tape from this doc today. All that I read on this board about VR says that it has a long way to go before it replaces us and the conversation with this office manager confirmed that for me.
