Andrews or M-Tec

Hello to All - I have been researching the "top 3" MT courses all week. I think I would be more comfortable with the additional support that Andrews and M-Tec provide, in addition to the training in the use expanders. I just wanted to ask any now working graduates if they felt the equipment and materials they received with the program are being well used now that they are working MT's.
It appears (and I may be totally off base here) that Andrews might be offering more useful books. It seems that some of the materials being provided by M-Tec are out of date, less popular, not widely available books. Andrews also includes "a new transcription machine properly equipped for medical transcription purposes". I'm guessing that would be the machine, foot pedal & headset? Any Andrews graduates - are you able to use this in the "real world" or just with the course?
If anyone would be willing to share with me which course (Andrews or M-Tec) they completed and if there were additional items you wished had been included or that you needed to purchase since you've been a working MT, I would be very grateful.
I was also wondering about support after completing the course. Are you pleased with any continuing support. Do they help prepare you for the RMT and CMT exams and how well prepared did you feel for these exams?
I would like to get started, but I want to start by choosing the best course for me.
Thanks Much - Renee

Renee,
From the Andrews' website:
The course materials include a foot pedal and software to run the transcription CDs.
As I recall, we haven't used machines for quite some time. The course materials now come on a CD, which more closely matches the way MTs get their work today.
The foot pedal might be usable with some employers and it might not. The employer might or might not provide a footpedal--it all depends.
I'm sure Linda will be along shortly to clarify this.

Andrews grad here. I use my reference materials daily. My foot pedal from school is not compatible with my work platform, but my employer provided that for me. I do believe the pedal from school is compatible with most platforms though. The only other things I have had to buy are an updated drug book and Stedman's Emergency Medicine words. I transcribe on an ER account, so this has come in handy, although most of the phrases in that are also in the Medical Phrase Index that was provided with my school materials.
The school is fantastic. I love how I can still go to the student boards for any support I may need even though I am a grad now.

M-Tec alum. Graduated 4 years ago and have been working acute care for a national since 2 weeks after graduating. You can't go wrong with either M-Tec or Andrews. M-Tec provides a foot pedal and headphones. You get absolutely everything you need with M-Tec and do not need any additional references unless you want them. The books are definitely not outdated. If it wasnt for M-Tec I wouldnt have gotten my RMT certification and thanks to M-Tec I am now studying to sit for the CMT in August. The job opportunities through M-Tec are limitless as is the ongoing support. The graduate board is a wonderful way to network and bounce questions off of other employed grads. I couldn't be happier with chosing M-Tec and know I can get a job anywhere, anytime.

I am in the same boat here, trying to decide between the two schools. All I have read on this website is that Andrews and M-TEC are the top two schools. I, too, was leaning towards Andrews. Then I went to the AHDI website. I was a little concerned because I was under the impression that there were only 3 schools that are approved by the AHDI (don't know where I got that) and I found out that there are many. M-TEC has this big write up about being the first approved school and how great it is and I expected the same for Andrews, but was disappointed! Andrews' write up seemed to be no different from the other schools.
So what makes Andrews a top school? I am so confused now!!! HELP!

I sent you a PM.
They've relaxed their requirements so much now that they've got so many schools on there that are "approved" now that about the only ones that aren't are AHP, Penn Foster, Tran Scam, etc. The more schools that are added, the more worthless the "approval" becomes.
Just because a school has been deemed "not a ripoff" by the mighty AHDI certainly doesn't mean that all of them are of the same quality. Far from it.

I am not about to say one is better than the other, but I went to M-TEC and was very impressed with how much they teach about the technical side of things. That can be really helpful for those who are not computer savvy.
I don't know if they still do it, but they had a (free for graduates) study group/lessons for those going for the CMT.
When I got a job with Webmedx, I was provided with a computer and foot pedal and they also send free headsets and keyboards when you need them (although I prefer a different type of keyboard so I usually buy my own). They also do 24-hour tech help when you use their computer.
I don't know about Andrews since I didn't go there, but maybe they offer technical lessons and CMT study groups/lessons also. You'd have to ask them though. Maybe that part doesn't interest you. Just giving my 2 cents.

Wow. Is this true? I mean, do they really "give" you a computer? Sounds too good to be true! Does anyone know if they still do this?

There are a few places that "provide" you with a computer. I believe that unless you work there a long time, you have to return it if you quit. There are usually very strict restrictions on what you can use the computer for and what you can put on it. I think some of them might deduct a certain amount from your paycheck for it also, but I'm not sure about that.

I think mine had a 250$ deposit taken out something like 20 bucks at a time. You get that back when you return it. There are restrictions on what you can put on it, but I can use it to surf the net and it's great that I don't have to use the "family" computer for work.

Just wanted to mention that you can visit M-Tec's actual forum where the students are. You can see how supportive it is there and what everyone is talking about. I think it helps to know what kind of environment you will be entering. Now, if I could just remember the link, that might be helpful. Maybe it is in their section below?

The forum is linked from the main M-TEC page, or you can go directly from here. You can also search the forum to see what has been discussed in the past (I found that very helpful when first exploring MT as a career option).
The main M-TEC page is http://www.mtecinc.com and also contains helpful information to those interested in MT.
